What we do.

Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession focused on diagnosing, treating, and preventing physical disabilities or movement impairments caused by injury, illness, or aging. Physiotherapists use a variety of techniques, exercises, and modalities to help individuals improve their mobility, strength, flexibility, and overall physical function.

The goal of physiotherapy is to restore or enhance the body’s ability to move, relieve pain, prevent further injury, and improve quality of life. It can be applied to a wide range of conditions, including musculoskeletal, neurological, respiratory, and cardiovascular disorders. At Balance Physiotherapy, we are one of the few clinics in the GTA that offer neurological physiotherapy (or neuro-physiotherapy), which is a specialized branch of physiotherapy that focuses on the rehabilitation of individuals with neurological conditions affecting the nervous system. These conditions can involve the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves, leading to issues such as movement impairments, balance problems, and sensory dysfunction.

Techniques Used in Neuro-Physiotherapy:

1. Motor Learning: Exercises designed to help the brain relearn movements that have been lost or impaired due to a neurological condition.

2. Strengthening Exercises: These exercises aim to increase the strength of muscles affected by neurological conditions.

3. Balance and Coordination Training: Specific exercises are designed to address problems related to poor stability, gait issues, or falls.

4. Functional Training: Focused on improving the ability to perform everyday tasks, such as walking, sitting, standing, dressing, or using the bathroom.

5. Gait Training: For individuals with walking difficulties, physiotherapists use exercises to improve walking patterns, and may also use assistive devices, such as walkers or braces, to help with mobility.

6. Manual Therapy: Techniques such as joint mobilizations or soft tissue manipulation may be used to improve movement, relieve pain, and reduce muscle tightness.

7. Bobath therapy: A hands-on approach to treatment that helps improve posture, mobility, and movement patterns.

Neuro-physiotherapy is highly individualized and depends on the specific condition and needs of the patient. Our physiotherapists are highly experienced in the assessment and management of complex neurological and orthopaedic conditions with therapy being provided one-on-one. Each of our physiotherapists has their own area of special expertise and are able to cross-refer to each other when needed so that optimal care is always provided.
